Seasonal changes in light and temperature can play a major role in how we think, feel and behave.

How mood and season are related

We must have felt that the warm weather affects our mood, we feel happier and happier. What researchers have also found is that temperatures also affect our behavior.

For example, if you hear about a crime committed in the summer, you are more likely to perceive this act as an impulsive act, while if it happens in the winter, the same crime will seem intentional and cold-blooded.

A 2008 study found that when people keep a hot drink, they are more likely to see others as warmer and more enjoyable. Holding a cold drink in hand, on the other hand, makes participants perceive others as interpersonal colder.

Why light affects mood

It’s no secret that light can have a significant effect on our mood. Bright, sunny days allow us to feel happy and energized, while dark, gloomy days could take away our inspiration. Light also plays a role in our personal preferences for certain seasons of the year.

The rhythm of our body is a 24-hour cycle of wakefulness and drowsiness influenced by sunlight. Decreased amounts of sunlight cause the body to release hormones that cause periods of lethargy.

The lack of sunlight during the autumn and winter months is related to what is known as seasonal affective disorder. People who experience symptoms of this disorder may feel depressed during the darker, shorter days of the year. They may also experience fatigue, increased appetite, and loss of interest in activities they normally enjoy.

What your favorite season reveals for yourself

Temperature and light levels can play a role in determining which season you love the most, but could they create preferences as well as reveal something about your main personality? Here are just a few possible trends that your favorite season may show for you.

Spring occurs when short, dark winter days give way to warmer temperatures and greener outdoor spaces.

If spring is your favorite season, then you have a tendency to dream and plan. Your life needs renewal, as does nature after a long cold winter.

Summer is associated with longer, warmer, brighter days. If summer is your favorite time of the year, it may mean that you like to go out and lead an active lifestyle.

The summer months are a time for travel and discovery. You are probably an extrovert and describe people as optimistic, kind and assertive.

“Delicious autumn! My very soul longs for it, and if I were a bird, I would fly on the ground, looking for another autumn” -George Elliott (also known as Mary Ann Evans) writes about her attachment to the autumn season.

Autumn is perceived as a good time for a new beginning. Vibrant orange colors and cooler autumn weather attract your constant desire for change. The upcoming holidays are inspiring many to take stock of the past year and plan new things.

If you consider the cold winter months your favorite season, it may mean that you tend to be a bit of an introverted “home” person.

Wearing a warm sweater and squeezing the couch with a hot drink to escape the cold may sound like your idea for the perfect afternoon.

However, it is important to remember that our individual preferences can be influenced by a wide variety of factors, including our experience.
